Every pod is shaped, laid and finished by Dharma in Bali. Fibreglass construction, custom-fitted to your moped, scooter or motorbike, sized around your dog, finished in any colour you want.

Why we build in fibreglass — not wood

Most dog pod makers in Bali build with plywood or timber because it's cheap and quick. The trade-off shows up six months later, when wet season finishes and the pod is full of mould, the joints have split, and the paint is peeling off the side.

Dharma builds every pod from hand-laid fibreglass — the same material used for the boats in Benoa harbour, the surfboards in Uluwatu's lineup and the bodywork on your scooter itself. It costs more to make, it takes more skill, and the finished pod lasts years longer.

Bali weather is brutal on wood

95% humidity, daily downpours through wet season, salty air on the coast, and 30°C+ sun every dry day. Plywood absorbs water, swells, splits along the grain, sprouts mould inside the joints, and rusts every screw holding it together. Even marine ply struggles long-term in this climate. We've repaired enough wooden pods to know.

Fibreglass was made for this

Glass fibre cloth + resin + gel coat = a fully sealed, monolithic shell with no joints to fail and no fibres for water to soak into. It's the standard material for boat hulls, water tanks, surfboards and motorcycle fairings precisely because tropical and marine environments destroy everything else.

The advantages, point by point

1. Fully waterproof

Fibreglass doesn't absorb water. Bali downpour, beach spray or hosing it down — it sheds water completely. Wood swells; fibreglass doesn't.

2. No rot, no mould, no smell

Fibreglass is biologically inert. Wooden pods grow mould inside the padding within one wet season. Fibreglass stays fresh for years.

3. Lighter on your bike

Fibreglass is dramatically lighter than equivalent plywood. Better handling, shorter braking distances, less wear on the bike's rear shock and frame.

4. Stronger on impact

Fibreglass flexes and absorbs energy in a low-speed knock. Plywood splits along the grain. The same reason boats and crash helmets are fibreglass.

5. UV stable, salt-resistant gel coat

The outer gel coat is built to handle tropical sun and coastal salt without fading, peeling or chalking — the way painted plywood does after one dry season.

6. Smooth, curved, beautiful

Because fibreglass is moulded, we can do flowing curves, rounded edges and aerodynamic shapes wood can't. The finish is glass-smooth and feels like real bodywork.

7. Easy to clean

Hose it out, wipe it down. No grain to stain, no joins to trap dirt. Sand from the beach run rinses straight out the drainage holes.

8. Repairable, not replaceable

If you ever ding a fibreglass pod, it's a small patch and re-coat — same as fixing a surfboard. Splintered plywood usually means a new pod.

How Dharma builds each fibreglass pod

  1. Mould. A custom mould is shaped to your bike's rack and your dog's measurements.
  2. Lay-up. Layers of woven fibreglass cloth are hand-laid into the mould with marine-grade resin for full waterproofing.
  3. Cure. The shell cures hard into a single, jointless piece — strong, light, totally sealed.
  4. Finish. The shell is sanded smooth and finished with a coloured UV-stable gel coat — your choice of colour.
  5. Fit-out. Padded interior, ventilation, harness clip-in points, drainage holes and any extras like acrylic windows or reflective trim.
  6. Mount. Fitted directly to your bike's rack in Bali — bolted, not strapped — and you ride away.
